GM fills in the missing piece with Traverse
May 09, 2008
|
|
Badge engineering is alive and well at General Motors, and the upcoming Chevrolet Traverse is the latest example of this marketing tactic.
The automaker recently created an all-new full-size wagon platform and assigned it to a number of its divisions. They, in turn, developed their own styling treatments and affixed their respective logos to freshly minted body panels.
The GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and especially the Buick Enclave have won over buyers with their attractive designs and V-6...

Tire Tracks: 1974 Oldsmobile 98
May 09, 2008
|
|
As Marcus Hunter stood next to his 1974 Oldsmobile 98 at the recent Chromed-Out Car Show at North Park in Burlington, a boy of about 11 or 12 walked up and started asking questions.
“Do you like this car?” the boy asked one person. Then he turned to Hunter: “You selling this car? I want it.”
Hunter, 27, owns Marcus’ Special Touch, a wash, wax and detailing shop in Burlington. He gets a lot of questions about his vintage Olds, which he spent about two years getting in shape. The 4...

Forester’s now bigger, and better looking
May 06, 2008

Is the 2009 Subaru Forester really a sport utility vehicle, or simply a wagon-bodied underling?
The Japanese-based car company is cautiously hedging its bets on that question. Literature distributed during the Forester’s reveal at January’s Detroit Auto Show referred to the styling as “more SUV-like.” That modest admission seems to indicate that Subaru feels it deserves to join the larger Tribeca as a junior member in the company’s sport utility grouping.
But, ute or no ute, this...

Tire Tracks: 1967 Plymouth Barracuda
May 06, 2008
|
|
Some other vintage autos at the Chromed-Out Car Show sported custom wheels, but Prince Gadison’s 1967 Plymouth Barracuda was strictly stock.
“You won’t ever see big rims on it,” he says.
Gadison, 60, competed in the Old School category of the show April 27 at North Park in Burlington. The yellow Cuda has been in the family for four decades.
“My mother bought it new,” says Gadison, who works in a nursing home. “It’s been a family car the whole time.”
The Plymouth cos...

Minor tweaks make all the difference
April 28, 2008

When first launched, Acura’s TSX was a neat and tidy package. It was a treat for the eyes and fun to drive.
Five years later, its place in Acura’s lineup is more significant, and it shows. Beneath the layer of pomp and circumstance associated with the launch here, there’s something else: more purpose and urgency. Sure, the TSX has been a good seller for Honda’s upscale division, behind the larger TL sedan and MDX sport utility vehicle.
However, with the so-called “near-premium...

Tire Tracks: 1968 Chevrolet pickup

Special to the News & Record
Bob Zane has two 1968 Chevrolet pickups at his Greensboro business, one in pieces at the back of the warehouse. When he finishes restoring that one, he plans to sell the other one.
It’s not the first ’68 Chevy pickup he’s rebuilt.
“I actually had my ’68 Chevrolet truck stolen,” Zane says. “I had done a restoration on it.”
Helping Zane with the restoration work is his son-in-law, Aaron Barrett, whose black 1970 Plymouth wa...

Tire Tracks: 1970 Plymouth Road Runner
April 21, 2008
|
|
When Aaron Barrett spotted a woman from Greensboro walking across a driveway in his hometown of Las Vegas a few years ago, he had no idea that chance meeting would lead to a move across the country and a job with a father-in-law who shares his love for old cars. Plus a chance to start fresh with a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner, just like one that was stolen from him.
“It was pretty nice,” he says. “It was blown and the whole nine yards. Somebody decided they wanted it, and cut through my ga...

New Ram locks horns with competition
April 21, 2008
|
|
It was a wild spectacle like no other in downtown Detroit, of all places.
Among a specially imported herd of 120 long-horn cattle was a trio of 2009 Dodge Ram pickups, which created their own stampede of photographers directly outside Cobo Hall in January, the scene of the 2008 North American International Auto Show.
It was a raucous introduction for the all-new Ram, which parent Chrysler hopes will also steal sales and market share from General Motors, Ford and Toyota.
First impressio...

Ford and Harley Davidson mark 105 years
April 18, 2008
|
|
If you think riding a raucous, powerful Harley Davidson motorcycle is a bold experience, try getting behind the wheel of the new-for-2008 Ford F250 Super Duty Harley Davidson pickup truck.
This 3-ton, four-door truck rides on 20-inch, Harley-inspired wheels; drivers tower over other vehicles and can wind up, like I did, eye to eye with the driver of a cement truck.
Indeed, the Harley Super Duty pickup truck is so tall, it makes the ground-hugging, little Mazda Miata roadster look like a me...

Honda recalls 353K Accord sedans over windshield wiper motor
April 17, 2008
|
|
(AP) — Honda Motor Co. is recalling 353,000 Accord sedans over possible corrosion in the windshield wiper motor.
Honda said Wednesday the recall involves Accords from the 2003 model year. The automaker says water could enter an area near the windshield wiper motor and cause corrosion.
The corrosion could cause the electrical circuit breaker inside the motor area to fail and could prevent the motor from working, potentially leading to a crash.
No injuries or crashes have been attribute...
